Alaska State Representative
Deana Waters: Ms. Waters was born and raised on a small farm in western Montana. She attended the University of Montana in Missoula and graduated in 1995 with a Bachelors Degree in English and History (secondary education emphasis). In 1998, she graduated with honors from the UM College of Technology Paralegal Studies program, which is ABA approved. Ms. Waters ranked second in her class and she was awarded the Presidential Recognition Award for Outstanding Scholastic Achievement. During her two years at the College of Technology, Ms. Waters tutored English at the academic support center, represented the College on the Student Advisory Committee, assisted in the ABA approval application process, and was a teaching assistant for first year legal research and writing classes.
Ms. Waters has been employed as a paralegal with Cook Schuhmann & Groseclose, Inc. since 2000, where she specializes in civil litigation, family law, workers’ compensation and collections. She has served on the University of Alaska Fairbanks Paralegal Program advisory board since 2003 and is currently the chair of the Assessment Subcommittee. Ms. Waters has been an adjunct faculty, teaching Ethics and team-teaching Civil Procedure and Tort Law, in the paralegal program since January 2006.
Ms. Waters is a charter member of the Fairbanks Association of Legal Assistants and has served as its president, vice president and CLE Committee Chair. She is also a member of the National Association of Legal Assistants and the UAF Paralegal Studies Advisory Committee. In September 2005, she successfully passed the Certified Legal Assistant examination and became a certified paralegal. In June 2007, Ms. Waters completed her Advanced Paralegal Certification in Discovery. She was recently appointed to a three year term on NALA’s Continuing Education Council.
