Karin Davidson: Karin is a 44 year old mother of two grown children and three young grandchildren. She earned her A.A.S. degree in Paralegal Studies from Kaplan University in October of 2008 and in July of 2010, and will also earn her B.S. degree in Legal Studies from Kaplan University. Karin is an active volunteer with a local Cub Scout pack and has been a youth group volunteer for 11 years. In her spare time, Karin loves hiking, camping, boating, gardening, bonfires, spending time with family and friends, caring for her pets, writing for personal pleasure, reading almost anything she can get her hands on, and self-education on topics that catch her interest. Lilo Whittaker: Lilo owned a small business for 23 years. She sold her business in 2007 and subsequently attended Ursuline College, an ABA Approved program and obtained a certificate in Legal Studies. Ohio Senate – Ohio has 33 members in the Senate
Ohio House of Representatives – The Ohio House of Representatives is divided into 99 districts. Since 1967, these legislative districts have been determined on the basis of population, with each drawn to include approximately 110,000 persons.

Ohio Supreme Court – The court system in Ohio is comprised of:
- The Supreme Court
- Ohio Court of Appeals- The state is divided into 12 appellate districts, each of which is served by a court of appeals. This link provides links to all 12 districts as well as contact information for each court.
- Ohio Court of Claims – has original jurisdiction to hear and determine all civil actions filed against the state of Ohio and its agencies. The court also hears appeals from decisions made by the attorney general on claims allowed under the Victims of Crime Act.
- Courts of Common Pleas - There is a court of common pleas in each of the 88 counties.
- General Division - has original jurisdiction in all criminal felony cases and in all civil cases in which the amount in controversy is more than $15,000, they also have appellate jurisdiction over the decisions of some state administrative agencies.
- Domestic Relations Division - have jurisdiction over all proceedings involving divorce or dissolution of marriages, annulment, legal separation, spousal support and allocation of parental rights and responsibilities for the care of children.
- Juvenile Division - courts hear cases involving persons under 18 years of age who are charged with acts that would be crimes if committed by an adult. They also hear cases involving unruly, dependent and neglected children. Juvenile courts have jurisdiction in adult cases involving paternity, child abuse, nonsupport, contributing to the delinquency of minors and the failure to send children to school.
- Probate Division - courts have jurisdiction over the probate of wills and supervision of the administration of estates and guardianships. Probate courts are divisions of the courts of common pleas. Probate courts also have jurisdiction over the issuance of marriage licenses, adoption proceedings, determination of sanity or mental competency and certain eminent domain proceedings.
- Municipal and County Courts - courts have limited civil jurisdiction. Municipal and county courts may hear civil cases in which the amount of money in dispute does not exceed $15,000. Municipal court judges and county court judges must be attorneys with at least six years of experience in the practice of law.
- Mayor’s Courts – are not a part of the judicial branch of Ohio government and are not courts of record. Additionally, at the request of the General Assembly, the Supreme Court has adopted rules providing for court procedures and basic legal education for mayors. Mayors whose courts hear alcohol- and drug-related traffic offenses have additional educational requirements. Ohio and Louisiana are the only two states that allow the mayors of municipal corporations to preside over a court.
Ohio Administrative Director of the Courts – is a constitutional position.
Ohio Criminal Sentencing Commission – It is responsible for conducting a review of Ohio’s sentencing statutes and sentencing patterns, and making recommendations regarding necessary statutory changes. The Commission consists of 31 members, 10 of whom are judges appointed by the Chief Justice.

Client’s Security Fund – established in 1985 to provide assistance to clients who have been financially harmed by the dishonest conduct of a licensed Ohio attorney.
Ohio Ethics Commission – has jurisdiction over Ohio’s public officials and employees at the state and local levels of government, except legislators, judges, and their staffs.
Ohio Lawyers Assistance Program – provides confidential help to lawyers, judges and law students suffering from alcoholism, substance abuse or other addictions, or mental illness.
Board of Unauthorized Practice of Law – consists of 12 members who are appointed to a three-year term by the Supreme Court. The Board conducts hearings, preserves the record, and makes findings and recommendations to the Supreme Court in cases involving the alleged unauthorized practice of law.
